President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo demanded on Thursday that the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry accelerate the construction of the Sei Gong Dam in Galang, Riau Islands, to improve clean water access in the archipelagic province. Jokowi and First Lady Iriana Widodo visited the construction on the island, which is about 50 kilometers from Batam, accompanied by Riau Islands Governor Nurdin Basirun and Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono. In Jakarta, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) held a public discussion on International Water Day and the institute’s 50th anniversary during which they reflected on their contributions to innovations in water management systems. The institute’s head of instrumentation, Anto Tri Sugiarto, said water shortages in many provinces could not be solved partially, but must be dealt with through comprehensive action.“Indonesia’s water crisis is not because we have less water but because it is poorly managed. Some places in Indonesia have floods and droughts alternately,” he said.
